To create a mural for Strathfield South High School to be placed at the school’s entrance.
The design of this mural is a deconstruction of Strathfield South’s school motto, “Many cultures, common values, one school”.
The students of Strathfield South High School represent over 60 different cultures.
The artwork is composed of a collage of graphic shapes, which have each been taken from the many flags of the countries that the student body represent.
Removed from their initial context, elements from the flags have been recoloured with a palette that draws from the local natural environment, something that each of these cultures now share. In essence, the design is a visual representation of common values.
Once abstracted and recoloured, the shapes have been united to demonstrate the intricate personality of the school. Weaving the name of the school and its motto through the composition further reflects this unity in a beautiful, impactful supergraphic.
“I commissioned Leading Hand to design large murals to serve as the public face of my school. Brett and his team were meticulous in their consultation and desire to understand my school’s context to ensure that my school and community’s needs were met. The finished product is outstanding, and has received unanimous praise from within and outside the school for the way that the designs and colours lift what were previously drab, red brick spaces. The team at Leading Hand are fantastic to work with and are very clearly focused on delivering exactly what their clients require to ensure a unique, professional service that truly reflects the character of space their designs are serving. I would certainly work with Leading Hand again whenever I needed a distinctive, thoughtful design for a space of any size.”
