National Health and Medical Research Council

In 2023, Leading Hand successfully tendered for a large – and important – digital project.

Summary

The National Health and Medical Research Council, the main Australian Government authority responsible for medical research, wanted to publish the sixth edition of its leading print resource, Staying healthy: preventing infectious diseases in early childhood education and care services, in digital form. Making a print publication work well digitally needs skilful consideration of its visual elements.

This huge project saw us designing and delivering a visual concept for the previously print-only resource that was clean, clear, and user-friendly but professional. Government standards for websites require a high level of attention to detail, and a major responsibility was meeting strict WCAG 2.1 AA compliance to ensure the site – and accompanying documents – would be fully accessible. For this, we implemented easy navigation around the 208-page report, extensive hyperlinking, high visual contrast, effective alt-text on all photos and infographics, and a clear reading order. We also undertook extensive image research to deliver a long catalogue of topic-relevant photographs.

In addition, we designed and delivered a suite of publicly available supporting documents and downloads, which included 4 informative posters, an information sheet, multiple fact sheets, presentation slide templates, and alternative document covers.

NHMRC funds high-quality health and medical research and building research capability, and Staying healthy is one of its most widely used resources. We’re delighted to have assisted this key medical resource’s journey from print to interactive, user-friendly and updatable digital.
