Kirby Institute

Our relationship with the world-leading Kirby Institute, an infectious diseases research centre at UNSW Sydney, began in 2018 with the RISE Study.

Summary

This large-scale, nationwide body of research explored people’s experiences of being diagnosed with HIV, the effects on their wellbeing of accessing HIV support services, their access to HIV clinical care, and their uptake of HIV treatments.

Since then, we have produced distinct visual identities for several of the institute’s research studies.

Our work on the RISE Study started with the development and roll-out of a campaign identity, including collateral for print and digital distribution. A major – and sensitive – part of this project was art directing a photoshoot to capture real images of volunteers with HIV. The photos were a prominent, engaging and powerful feature of the campaign.

Later projects with the Kirby Institute have seen us designing new and individual campaign logos and full suites of assets for a variety of studies, including COVID-19, Impala KS (researching Kaposi sarcoma in Africa) and Trax (tracking community responses to the monkeypox outbreak). We’ve also designed websites and custom print jobs for Kirby’s Dried Blood Spot HIV testing kits.

The Kirby Institute’s presence in health research is far-ranging: over 980 collaborations in 52 countries across 6 continents. Strongly focused on populations experiencing health disadvantage – including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and lower-income communities – the institute partners with these communities to ensure relevant, ethical and practical research. Every Kirby Institute project is a privilege for the Leading Hand team.
