Health Equity Matters – previously AFAO – is the national federation for the leading HIV and LGBTQIA+ organisations in Australia, globally recognised for its leadership, policy expertise and support services in sexual health.

Leading Hand first worked with AFAO way back in 2003, creating designs and branding for many programs and initiatives.
We were asked to adapt a booklet we’d previously designed – Us Mob and HIV – into a website, to make information on HIV more widely available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The project also involved refreshing the booklet and working with AFAO’s project officers for Indigenous communities to ensure the final designs and messaging would be relevant, appropriate and effective.
The revised booklet became an optimistic, easily digestible resource with new iconography, bright colours and soft shapes, an approach we translated to the website and accompanying collateral such as posters, factsheets and animations.
Next, we developed a new website and branding for Better to Know, a sexual health resource for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We worked in consultation with Indigenous design agency Bayila Creative as well as AFAO’s community project officers.
Our bespoke logo reflected the philosophy of protecting and empowering Indigenous Australians and their communities. Our branding and creative assets complemented those of Us Mob and HIV but employed a unique colour palette and Indigenous design elements based on the logo.
We are proud of these two projects, which delivered important sexual health resources for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Access to health information belongs to all Australians.
