Centre for Population Genomics

In February 2021, Leading Hand began another ongoing medical research relationship – in the emerging field of genomic medicine, which uses a person’s genetic information to personalise their health care outcomes.

Summary

The ability to read such information can guide diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease, but many of the world’s diverse communities don’t have access to advances in this area.

The centre approached us to develop ‘an artwork that represents all the diverse peoples living in Australia’ as the primary visual for a database of genetic variation.

We developed three concepts: two that used people as characters and a more abstract one utilising shapes. The client chose one of the ‘people’ concepts, as it represented the sheer diversity and scale of the Australian population in an expandable library of unique faces.

From there, we designed an eye-catching, easy-to-navigate website and a suite of associated assets, including a report cover, socials banners, and printed banners and flyers.

The next project was a website refresh and full brand identity for the ‘OurDNA’ database. Since then, we have continued to produce illustrations, animations and assorted brand assets for the centre.

This geographically disperse research initiative – a partnership between the Garvan Institute in Sydney and the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute in Melbourne – is working to build more equitable access to the latest health care developments for all Australians. Our colourful, relatable designs help to draw attention to the centre’s presence and engage everyone in its efforts.
